The pink fairy armadillo (Chlamyphorus truncatus) or pichiciego is the smallest species of armadillo (mammals of the families Chamyphoridae and Dasypodidae, recognized by a bony armor shell). It was first described and illustrated by Richard Harlan (based on this specimen) in "Description of a New Genus of Mammiferous Quadrupeds, of the Order Edenta," in Annals of the Lyceum of Natural History of New-York, 1 (1824-1825): 235-246 and plates 19 and 20, pictured here.
