"These are the horns of Strepsiceros of Linneaus or Condoma of Buffon & striped Antelope of Pennant.
In his "Walk through the Phil[adelphi]a Museum" (1805-1806), p. 38, Peale wrote: "The head of the Strepsiceros with those large spiral horns, makes us regret we cannot see the intire Animal, whose body is reported to be 9 feet long."
Notes:
The greater kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros)is a woodland antelope found throughout eastern and southern Africa. The head-and-body length can range from six to eight feet, with the tail adding a further one to two feet.
