"The above description is taken from a specimen in the Philadelphia Museum, brought from near New Orleans, and is, without doubt, distinct from the Gray Squirrel."

Notes:

Both Richard Harlan and John Godman identify this species as "Sciurus rufiventer Geoff" (a subspecies of the fox squirrel now known as Sciurus niger rufiventer É. Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire,1803), or Say's squirrel, based on the Museum's New Orleans specimen. Godman called it the red-belly squirrel (American Natural History. Part I. Mastology, 3 vols.
