Notes:
Both Richard Harlan and John Godman identify this species as "Sciurus rufiventer Geoff" (a subspecies of the fox squirrel now known as Sciurus niger rufiventer É. Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire,1803), or Say's squirrel, based on the Museum's New Orleans specimen. Godman called it the red-belly squirrel (American Natural History. Part I. Mastology, 3 vols.
