"This strange Animal . . . is . . . from New-holand, differing from our oposom in having such long hind & short fore legs, yet having the false belly. It is a very fleet Animal; leaping from rock to Rock, it is not easily taken."

Notes:

There are now four recognized species of kangaroo, all indigenous to Australia and New Guinea . The eastern grey kangaroo, pictured here, was described by George Shaw in The Naturalists's Miscellany (London,1790) as Macropus giganteus.
