In his "Walk through the Phil[adelphi]a Museum" (1805-1806), p 15, Peale wrote of the armadillo: "With its coat of mail, when it roles its self up, is perfectly secure. There are a variety of Armadillo’s (Dasypus) distinguished from each other by some having 3, 6, 12 & 18 Bands."

Notes:

The nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus), also known as the nine-banded long-nosed armadillo or common long-nosed armadillo, is a mammal found in North, Central, and South America, making it the most widespread of the armadillos.
