"Mongoose or Wooly Maucauco. & the only one I have of this genus. It was a good natured, playful animal. Please to observe the head, what a projected snout, how different from the Monkey – but the feet are much like the Monkey; having toes resembling fingers. This pretty animal, with its tail almost constantly erect; sharp Visage; bright orange coloured eyes; and with all the activity of the Monkey, gave it a curious and singular appearance. Its hair tho short is remarkably thick sett and of a fine texture."
United States Gazette (Philadelphia), 7 Feb 1806 adds: "This beautiful animal in its habits is allied to the Monkey."
