Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827) wrote, in "A Walk Through the Philad[elphi]a Museum" (1805–1806): "The Genus Struthio, ostrich, contains only two species, one African and one of South America." (Historical Society of Pennsylvania, coll. 0481)

On 17 December 1804, a "South American Ostrich Egg" was donated by Francis McCauley, as recorded in the Peale Museum Accessions Book (HSP, coll. 0481).
