Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827) wrote, in his 36th Lecture (ca. 1799): "No. 1813. Spotted breast Wren. This is a shorter Bird. the breast is mottled, and the under part next the tail deep brown. tail very short." (Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University Archives, coll. 40)

Peale's description is too short for the bird to be identified—even its status as a wren (Troglodytidae) is doubtful.
