Alexander Wilson (1766-1813) described this species under the name "Red-cockaded Woodpecker / Picus querulus" in American Ornithology vol. 2 (Pl. 15). Wilson (1810: 103) cited "Peale's Museum No. 2027" and wrote: "This new species I first discovered in the pine woods of North Carolina ... A preserved specimen has been deposited in the Museum of this city."
