"This tooth, compared with those found at the Salt Licks, on the Ohio, clearly proves, that those animals which formerly inhabited America, were not Elephants."

The donor is described as "of New-York."

The Scientific and Descriptive Catalogue of Peale's Museum (Philadelphia, 1796), p. 19 includes a grinder and tail of an elephant ("Elephans maximus, Lin.") given by Henry Laurens of South Carolina.
