Notes:

The jaguar (Panthera onca) is a large felid species and the only living member of the genus Panthera native to the Americas. Dr. Edward Stevens (1755-1834), a native of St. Croix (from where he sent the jaguar), emigrated to the U.S. where he became a member of the American Philosophical Society and a professor of medicine at King's College (Columbia University). Peale acknowledged receipt of the jaguar in a letter of 28 June 1805. Selected Papers, 2, part 2: 856-857
