Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827) wrote, in his 26th Lecture (ca. 1799): "No. 839. 4022. Speckled Snipe. The Eyes of a redish cast, placed far back on the head, the Plumage a mixture of brown, russet, black & white. The tail beautifully barred with small lines of black and white. No. 840. A variety of the same, rather smaller, and lighter colour generally. The wings extending beyond the tail." (Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University Archives, coll. 40)
