Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827) wrote, in his 21st Lecture (ca. 1799): "Botany-bay Goose. (alive). or rather Bent-Goose as the bill is smaller than the goose. Black round the base of the bill, which extends over the top of the head, pointed on the back of the neck. Dark russet neck […] below with a dark ring. The back & wing coverts dark brown; […] feathers edged grey. Wing quils & tail black. Feet dark brown." (Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University Archives, coll. 40)
Peale wrote, in "A Walk Through the Philad[elphi]a Museum" (1805–1806): "Also with a goose which probably is not described. We call it the short-legged goose, the legs are remarkably short, the neck & body long, the bill broad & thick but not long. The whole plumage dark brown with stripes of a russet white."
