Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827) wrote, in his 26th Lecture (ca. 1799): "836. Spoted [sic] snipe. The bill is black, strait, except a small curve at the point; back & wings brown, speckled with white. The wing quills black; tail brown, barred with white; under parts of the body white; iris & feet yellow. It is about 15 Inches long. It is a common bird in the vicinity of Philada. This appears to [be] a nondescript." (Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University Archives, coll. 40)
