A "three toed woodpecker Picus tridactylus from Maine" was presented by Mr. E. Abadie on 15 November 1827, as recorded in the Peale Museum Accessions Book (Historical Society of Pennsylvania, coll. 0481).

Charles Lucien Bonaparte (1803–1857) described this species under the name "Northern Three-toed Woodpecker / Picus tridactylus" in his continuation of American Ornithology vol. 2 (1828, Pl. 14). Bonaparte (1828: 64) cited "Philadelphia Museum, Male" but provided no number.
