During the First Barbary War, the USS Philadelphia, under Capt. William Bainbridge, ran aground off Tripoli Harbor on 31 Oct 1803. Her officers and men were imprisoned for 19 months. On 16 Feb 1804 Lt. Stephen Decatur led a party of volunteers aboard the Intrepid and burned the Philadelphia, which had been refloated by her captors.
Condy Raguet (1784-1842) was the first chargé d'affaires from the United States to Brazil and a noted politician and free trade advocate from Philadelphia.
