The areca nut is the seed of the areca palm (Areca catechu), which grows in much of the tropical Pacific, Southeast and South Asia, and parts of east Africa. It is commonly referred to as betel nut.
The donor, John Ansey (1769-1822), was a Philadelphia sea captain in the East Indies and China trade. James Peale painted his portrait in 1801.
