Robert Wharton (1757-1834), born in Southwark, Pa., apprenticed as a hatter but became a merchant and land speculator. He was elected to the Philadelphia Common Council in 1792, became an alderman four years later, and beginning in 1798, served fifteen intermittent terms as mayor of the city, the last of which ended in 1824.
