"The hook had been bated for fish and thrown into the Muskingum River. The wind blew the bated hook on shore, and a Hog took it and Run off with the line and Angle rod. The Owner persued the Hog drag[g]ing the Angle rod, followed and in an attempt to release the beast, broke the Hook. This was in the spring of 1806 and in the fall of the same year, fatted and killed and made Bacon of, and when made use of it was taken out."

Notes:

On 19 Oct 1818 the Accessions Book (p. 95) records the receipt of this same object, and relates the story in almost the same words, attributing the donation to a Mr. Price of Muskingum, Ohio.
