Notes:
The donor was Catherine (Potter) Stith (1795-1839), widow of Townshend Stith (1783-1823), the American consul at Tunis who died in Gibraltar on the return voyage to Philadelphia. In her widowhood Stith operated a "Seminary for Young Ladies so they may attain a liberal education" in Philadelphia and wrote Thoughts on Female Education (Philadelphia, 1831).
