National Gazette and Literary Register (Philadelphia), 28 Aug 1821 adds: "It will be recollected that this is the celebrated Dutch Admiral who carried a broom as his mast head, in the British Channel, signifying his intention to sweep the seas."
Notes:
Cornelis Maartenszoon Tromp (1629-1691) was a Dutch naval officer who served as lieutenant-admiral general in the Dutch Navy. He distinguished himself in the double battles of Schooneveld (May-June 1673) and the battle of Texel (August 1673) during the Third Anglo-Dutch War.
