Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827) wrote, in his 36th Lecture (ca. 1799): "No. 1815. Lesser Wren. this species is smaller than those of Europe No. 1809 & 1810 [i.e., Eurasian Wren, Troglodytes troglodytes]. it has a longer bill, general plumage much the same."

Alexander Wilson (1766-1813) described this species under the name "Winter Wren / Sylvia troglodytes?" in American Ornithology vol. 1 (Pl. 8), where "Peale's Museum No. 7284" was cited (Wilson 1808: 139). Wilson noted that he could "find no precise description of this bird, as an American species, in any European publication." / https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/175530#page/167/mode/1up (text) / https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/175530#page/149/mode/1up (plate)
