Alexander Wilson (1766-1813) described this species under the name "Sanderling Plover / Charadrius calidris" in American Ornithology vol. 7 (Pl. 59), and cited "Peale's Museum, No. 4204" (Wilson 1813: 68).
Wilson (1813: 129) also described a specimen in non-breeding plumage under the name "Ruddy Plover / Charadrius rubidus", while acknowledging that they were likely the same species.
