New World monkeys are the five families of primates that are found in the tropical regions of Mexico, Central and South America: Callitrichidae, Cebidae, Aotidae, Pitheciidae, and Atelidae.The five families are ranked together as the Ceboidea, the only extant superfamily in the parvorder Platyrrhini. Monkey species that are native to South American rainforests include howler monkeys, spider monkeys, capuchin monkeys, squirrel monkeys, tamarins and marmosets.
Richard Harlan (1796-1843), M.D., was an American paleontologist, anatomist, and physician. He was appointed the Peale Museum's professor of comparative anatomy in April 1821.
