According to William Maclure, in "Observations on the Geology of the United States, Explanatory of a Geological Map," transition rocks were those found betweeen primitive rocks and secondary rocks. Transactions of the American Philosophical Society, 6 (1809): 411-428, esp. 412.

Mahlon Dickerson (1770-1853) was later a Justice of the Supreme Court of New Jersey, Governor of New Jersey, U.S. Senator from New Jersey, U.S. Secretary of the Navy, and a U.S. District Judge for New Jersey.
