Constantin François de Chassebœuf, comte de Volney (1757-1820) was a French philosopher, abolitionist, writer, orientalist, and politician. He was in the United States from 1795 to June 1798 (the date of this manuscript); he visited the Peale Museum in 1795 and was quoted by Peale as saying: "This is the Temple of God! -- Here is nothing but Truth and Reason!" Dunlap's American Daily Advertiser, 30 Dec 1795.
