"Presented by Wm. E. Howel (Philada.). No. 1 Shell Marsh a good Manure for a clayey Soil. No. 2. the upper Stratum of a Greenish Colour & sulfurious Smell. No. 3. a Dark Couloured marle of great debth. Note. The upper surface where No. 2 & 3 are found is composed of a crust of Iron Strata, this taken off as useless & discovered [discarded?]. Number 2. of 2 or 3 feet debth, beneath this is No. 3 extending to an immence debth."

Aurora. General Advertiser (Philadelphia), 28 Nov 1806 identifies the donor as "E. Howell."

This specimen was probably marlstone.
