Poulson's American Daily Advertiser (Philadelphia), 21 Nov 1817 adds: "So celebrated from the changes in its colour and the singular movements of its eyes, (owing to the coolness of the weather, we cannot expect it to live but a few days)."

Notes:

The common chameleon or Mediterranean chameleon (Chamaeleo chamaeleon), pictured here, is the only species known in Spain.
