Seybert was a member of the American Philosophical Society and represented Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives 1809-1815.

His collection of almost 2,000 minerals was the first major purchase (in 1812 for $750) by the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia.
