On 31 Aug 1819 Josiah Chapman, of Bristol, Pa., wrote to Robert Patterson, president of the American Philosophical Society, offering navy duck for consideration for the Society's Magellanic premium, the nation's oldest medal for scientific achievement. On 7 Apr 1820 he was awarded the "Extra-Magellanic Premium (the highest)" for his "improvement in the manufacture of canvas." APS, Early Proceedings, pp. 490, 494
