Object Status:

Unlocated

Accession Date:

April 15, 1814

Primary Source Reference:

Peale Museum Accessions Book, Historical Society of Pennsylvania, p. 72

Additional Source Text:

"Much resembling the Horne of the Rhinoceros from an Indian Village (called Cold Spring) on the Alligany River, state of New York."

Notes:

Coldspring is in Cattaraugus County in western New York. Prior to the 17th century, the area was occupied by the Iroquoian-speaking Wenrohronon and Eriehronon. The more powerful Seneca eliminated these competing groups during the Beaver Wars beginning in 1638, as the Iroquois Confederacy sought to control the lucrative fur trade with the French and Dutch colonists.
