Fossil salt is another term for rock salt, or salt mined from mountain interiors rather than from the sea.

The donor may have been Henry Benbridge (or Bembridge) (1743-1812), a Philadelphia-born portrait painter who had settled in Charleston, S.C. He had been elected to the American Philosophical Society in 1771.
