Linnaeus, in his A general system of nature, through the three grand kingdoms of animals, vegetables, and minerals, vol 4 (London, 1806), pp. 97-99, identifies eleven species of Salpa, a marine invertebrate, none given the specific name socialis, and none of which were said to inhabit the Atlantic Ocean.

William Wood was the manager of the Peales' Baltimore Museum.
