Notes:

A species of squid of the family Loliginidae.

Charles Alexandre Lesueur (1778-1846) in Le Havre) was a French naturalist, artist, and explorer. He lived and traveled in the U.S. from 1816-1837, was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society in 1817, and published numerous scientific articles in the Journal of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. Many of his natual history drawings (now in the Bibliothèque centrale du Jardin des Plantes, Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle, Paris) were based on specimens in the Peale Museum. Charles Willson Peale painted his portrait.
