Augustus Edward Jessup (1797-1859) was a geologist, mineralogist, and paper manufacturer. He attended Dr. Thomas Cooper's Scientific School in Philadelphia, beginning about 1816. Jessup was elected a member of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia and became very active in its affairs. He made a trip to Mexico in 1817 or 1818, and returned with valuable mineral collections. He served as the geologist on the 1819-1820 Long Expedition to the Rocky Mountains (the source of this donation) and bequeathed his extensive mineralogical and geological collections to the Academy.
