John Cottle received a patent for a machine for threshing grain or grass seeds on 21 March 1803. Tench Coxe's statement at the foot of the description of the machine in a newspaper article pictured here documents that a complete working model, which had been submitted to the Pennsylvania Society for the Encouragement of Manufactures and the Useful Arts (which Coxe had founded in 1787) was on display at the Peale Museum.
