"The circumference of which is 18-1/2 inches and weight 7 lb. 10 oz. On sawing it thro' the middle a nail was found in the centre, serving as a nucleus for the calcarious matter to adhere to whilst soft -- three sides are a little flattened, occasioned, perhaps, by his laying on those sides, and being rubbed by the motion of the animal. The different layers or coatings plainly shew that in the first forming of the stone it was spherical, but that as it increased in bulk and weight, became more flattened, especially in the three outer coatings."
Notes:
The donor was Philadelphia brewer Caspar Wistar Haines (1762-1801).
