Poulson's American Daily Advertiser (Philadelphia), 6 Oct 1808 reads: "Native Gold, from Cabarus county, North Carolina, pure Gold, pure Silver, and pure Platinum, Palladium, obtained from Gold by the donor -- presented by Mr. Joseph Cloud."

Notes:

This specimen probably came from the Reed Mine, in Midland, N.C., about ten miles northeast of Charlotte, N.C., the site of the first documented commercial gold find in the United States. The mine began operating about 1803.

Joseph Cloud (1770-1845) was the chief assayer at the U.S. Mint at Philadelphia from 1797 to 1836. He was a member of the American Philosophical Society and the Philadelphia Linnean Society.
