Poulson’s American Daily Advertiser (Philadelphia), 5 Feb 1808, reads: "Perforated by insects in curious forms, shewing the manner of living and progress from the eggs."

Notes:

The pignut hickory (Carya glabra) is often infested with the hickory bark beetle (Scolytus quadrispinosus), which was first described by Thomas Say in 1824 (Journal of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, 3, part 2 [1824]: 323).
