"Where large quantitys of these and other Shells are found in the Earth and on its Surface in a valley one Side of which is covered with these Shells on a Bottom of Clay Sand and in many parts, of fullers Earth. & on the opposite side the soil is barron and very Rocky."

San Casciano in Val di Pesa is about ten miles southwest of Florence, Italy.
