"One coined in the reign of John the Second in 1481, the other in that of Manuel in 1495. It is recorded in Madeira, Money was so Scarce in the Reign of John that 20 dollars was sent from Lisbon in a Frigate to Finish a Church (in Consequence of the Inhabitants of Madeira not being able to raise that Sum of Money) with strict orders to use Economy in the disposal of it."

Notes:

John Woodside (1749-1835) was a clerk in the comptroller’s office of the Treasury Department and the father-in-law of James Leander Cathcart (also a donor to the Peale Museum). A veteran of the Revolutionary War, Woodside was a second lieutenant in a Pennsylvania battalion when he was captured at Fort Washington in 1776 and imprisoned for a year and a half.
