"It was found 7 or 8 feet bellow the surface of the ground. It evidently proves the art of manufacturing this ware (a kind of porcelain) together with chimical processes; the latter is evident from the black enamel &c.; it was known to the ancient Syracusians, before the time of Christ -- Accadinia [Acradina] being in ruins many hundred years evidently proves it."
Notes:
William Cutbush was serving as a midshipman on the frigate USS Philadelphia when it ran aground and was captured by Tripolitan forces in October 1803. The crew remained captive until the Barbary Wars ended in June 1805.
