Notes:
Stereotyping (or the printing of a page of text using a single metal printing plate rather than individual pieces of type) is thought to have first been used in 1795 by the Frenchman Firmin Didot (1764-1836) for his edition of François Callet’s Tables of Logarithms. But previous experiments had been tried in France to reproduce both printed text and handwriting that were known to Franklin. On 3 Nov 1783 Philippe-Denis Pierres sent to Franklin several trial sheets of stereotyping that he had made at Franklin's suggestion / Franklin Papers, Founders Online, National Archives / https://founders.archives.gov/documents/Franklin/01-41-02-0118
Louis (or Lewis) Franklin Bache (1779-1818) was Benjamin Franklin's grandson. It is not clear why Peale gave him the honorific "Dr."; he was not in the medical profession, although his older brother William was a physician.
