Indian Tobacco stopper made of the foot of the Musk, and mounted with Gold

Object Status:

Unlocated

Accession Date:

November 7, 1817

Primary Source Reference:

Peale Museum Accessions Book, Historical Society of Pennsylvania, p. 88

Notes:

The foot was probably from a musk deer, one of the seven species that make up Moschus, the only extant genus of the family Moschidae. Despite being commonly called deer, they are not true deer belonging to the family Cervidae.

Ebenezer Hazard (1744-1817) was a Philadelphia businessman and publisher who served as U.S. Postmaster General 1782-1789.

This artifact was offered as Lot 142 in the 13-14 October 1869 sale of "Peale's Museum Relics" owned by Montroville Wilson Dickeson (1810-1882), p. 6.
