"19 inches high & 15 inch broad. Holding in his hands a small cross and an apple. The virgin reading in a book and a candle burning on the table. Copied from an oil painting done in Italy belonging to Wm Bingham, Esq. of this city."

William Bingham (1752-1804) by this time was a wealthy Philadelphia merchant active in the American Revolution; he later became a U.S. Senator.
