Du Simitière Memorandum Books, Library of Congress, fol. 26r

Notes:

The artist of the drawing (possibly Du Simitière) was not identified. The print was an engraving by Simon Gribelin (1661-1733), after Paolo de Matteis (1662-1728), "Hercules Rejects Pleasure and Chuses Virtue" (London, 1713), pictured here.

For information on the commission, production, and iconography of the Matteis's painting (in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford), see Sheila O'Connell, “Lord Shaftesbury in Naples, 1711-1713,” in The Volume of the Walpole Society, vol. 54 (1988):149-219. For the painting, see https://artuk.org/discover/artworks/the-choice-of-hercules-142356

This drawing was valued at 7 shillings 6 pence (framed and glazed) in Du Simitière's estate inventory (p. 2).
