Daniel Roberdeau (1727-1795) was a Philadelphia merchant who represented Pennsylvania from 1777 to 1779 in the Continental Congress, where he signed the Articles of Confederation.
The donor, David Rittenhouse (1732-1796), was an American astronomer, inventor, clockmaker, mathematician, surveyor, scientific instrument craftsman, and public official. Rittenhouse was a member (and later President) of the American Philosophical Society and the first director of the United States Mint. He was also later a Visitor of Peale's Museum.
