Notes:
James Cox (1751-1834), an Englishman who settled in Philadelphia, was a bibliophile as well as a drawing master. He served as the librarian of the Mercantile Library Company, and his collection of more than 5,000 books went to the Library Company of Philadelphia in 1832 exchange for a $400 annuity.
