In addition to 17-year cicadas, Pennsylvania has at least nine species of annual cicadas. Du Simitière's specimen could have been an annual cicada or one from the 1766 appearance of the 17-year cicadas that emerged early. The 17-year cicada (Magicicada septendecim) is pictured here.
