Notes:

The Battle of Newtown, which took place on 29 Aug 1779 outside what is now Elmira, New York, was a victory of Continental troops over the British and their Iroquois allies. Gen John Sullivan (1740-1795) was an Irish-American major general in the Continental Army and delegate in the Continental Congress who was later governor of New Hampshire and a judge in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Hampshire. The Sullivan Expedition he commanded was a scorched earth campaign against the Iroquois towns that had taken up arms against the Americans.
